This project begins in a small soap factory of Nablus, in the north of the West Bank, where the Palestinians still produce soap manually from olive oil with a traditional process, strongly challenged by modern industrialization. In the past the soap factory was the pulsing heart of the local social and economic life. Now this ancient cultural heritage is slowly disappearing, due both to 39 years of occupation and to the natural process that makes the past as obsolete. Palestine, despite its fame of being among the most dangerous places on earth, is actually made of people, mostly of women and men tired of war and unfulfilled expectations, longing for peace and a for a better future for their families. This project describes also what it is like to be identified with a harsh prejudice, that defames people’s attachment and sense of belonging to the land. It tries to give dignity back to the Palestinians by presenting their daily reality, despite the common image we all have of them.
