Cities of the future

The impact of climate change represents the most severe
crisis that humanity has ever had to face. Throughout our
short history on this life-filled rock, we have been architects
of uncontrolled development, which now endangers our own
survival on the planet that hosts us.

To mitigate this phenomenon and the catastrophic events
that directly result from it, we have come to understand
that a change in our established habits is crucial. Many
fundamental aspects of our lives are destined to undergo
radical transformations, starting with what has become the
new habitat of humankind: cities. While they are the core and
foundational nucleus of civilization, they also represent the
primary source of human aggression against nature.

Cities cover only 3% of the Earth’s surface, yet they produce
more than 80% of the planet’s waste and are responsible for
75% of the total carbon dioxide emissions.
It is now clear that the current concept of cities must undergo
a complete transformation, but how? Can we turn urban
centers from being part of the problem to becoming sources of
solutions? Can technological progress find a balance with the
natural environment and enable humanity to save the planet
from itself?

“The cities of the future” explores these questions through
the words and experiences of some of the great protagonists
of our present and near future. Men and women who have
dedicated their lives to understanding the most complex
problems of our history, such as global warming, air pollution,
and the exploitation of the planet’s resources, with the
objective and hope of mobilizing the attention of the global
population and, above all, changing things for the better.

“The Cities of the Future” tells the story of how urban centers
will need to change to transform themselves from active
contributors to climate change into sources of solutions. The
series consists of four episodes, each dedicated to one of the
main themes related to the concept of cities:
Episode 1 – Energy
Episode 2 – Waste
Episode 3 – Pollution
Episode 4 – Mobility

The protagonist of the narrative is Viola Follini, a 26-year-old
activist and project manager at C40 Cities, the world’s largest
association of metropolises collaborating to combat climate
change. With her expertise and environmental awareness,
Viola becomes the guiding thread throughout the entire series,
symbolizing the positive emblem of the new generations who
must, and above all, will have to find solutions to make human
presence on Earth sustainable.
